What to do when all VM devices are showing unavailable to revert and greyed out?

Modified on Fri, 12 May, 2023 at 9:46 AM

As an instructor of a class if all your student VMs are greyed out and you are not able to revert, read on. For example, all the student devices are showing as 'Unavailable' therefore Instructors are unable to revert them.

This is because the VM is not set properly and there is an issue with the lab setup in the production environment. The actual fix will need to be implemented to avoid future occurrences of this issue hence we request you to raise a ticket. In addition, to save time, the following workaround may save you time while DevOps will attend to your ticket and fix this issue permanently.

Please follow the steps shown below to correct a possible error. There could be another root cause for the same error as well therefore recommend to raise the ticket at the same time.

On the Instructor Console, Click the user's device:

Click ESXi - Instructor only 'HTTPS' button

ESXi Login credentials are specified below (click the blank region to show them)

ESXi Splash screen (HTTPS)

Click Virtual Machines

Then click Linux_Client.

The VM 'Notes' section should be showing in just one line and not split into multiple lines.

and then click 'Edit Notes' as you need to rearrange these notes in just one line by using backspace keys in the beginning of each lines :

Click Save Notes.

You can now Power On the virtual machine:

Go back to the user's environment and click Refresh:

You can observe that the device statuses are back:
