My lab keeps disconnecting or running slowly

Before opening a support ticket, check the following items:

  • Are you using a Wi-Fi or wired internet connection? For stability, you should use a wired connection.
  • Which OS are you using? You should use a supported OS.
  • Are you using antivirus software?
  • Are you using a firewall? You should disconnect from any firewall.
  • Are you using a VPN? You should disconnect from any VPN.
  • Does your internet connection meet the minimum bandwidth requirements of 150 Kbps for each lab device? We recommend 450 Kbps so you can connect to three lab devices at once.

Next, you can run the Fortinet Lab Access Test at https://training.fortinet.com/mod/lab/test.php. It will tell you if your browser supports Canvas and WebSocket (required) and includes a speed test. The speed test provides information about the connection between your computer and the datacenter where your lab is running.

Lab Access Test

Choose your region from the drop-down list, and then click Run.

Note: A utility such as http://speedtest.net reports only the speed between your computer and your internet service provider, and therefore isn't the best measure of the speed between your computer and the lab.

Results and What They Mean

A. Lab Test Access is Showing "Bandwidth is Too Low"

  • Yellow: WARNING - Some performance degradation may be experienced (delayed keystrokes and mouse movements), but it will not prevent you from using the lab.
  • Red: POSSIBLE PROBLEM - Performance degradation will be experienced (delayed keystrokes and mouse movements), but the lab may still work for the user. Get the user to start a lab (or start a test in the same datacenter their class will be using) and get them to test and report on how it feels.

B. Web Socket Connection - Unable to Connect

  • Yellow: Connection with WebSocket failed but will fall back on HTTP method.
  • Red: Connection with WebSocket and fall back HTTP method failed. Try a different computer and internet connection.

If your lab continues to have performance issues, open a support ticket. Include the results of the speed test in the ticket.
